As an employer you are legally responsible for providing your employees with the information, instruction and training in correct health and safety procedures. This is not to be taken lightly especially as the cleaning industry is rated second for the most work related accidents.
As a new commercial cleaning business owner, this may seem off-putting but there are simple, straightforward measures you can take in order to manage your cleaning contracts and staff in an effective way.
Firstly, assess the health and safety issues of a new site when quoting for a contract. Are there any potential hazards with regards to ventilation, storage or other obstacles that will not only affect the way your staff perform their cleaning duties but may pose other dangers like fire risks, slip and trip hazards, chemical inhalation, etc?
As part of their induction, your employees should be aware of and fully trained in all aspects of health and safety including MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets), emergency procedures, method statements and safe working practices (storage of chemicals, materials and equipment, etc). They must also be familiar with your companies Health and Safety Plan.
Within your Health and Safety training consider using graphic tools such as slideshows and pictures and create a multiple choice questionnaire to test their knowledge at the end. While learning, some of your employees may be at a disadvantage because of their lack of English speaking skills, age or just inexperience in the cleaning industry. Consider their needs when creating your training package and always be patient, realising that some employees may need more training than others.
It is vital your employees understand all aspects of Health and Safety. Not only is this your legal responsibility as their employer but correct training means fewer accidents and faster cleaning times meaning higher profits in your bank account!
